The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Jaffna teaching hospital cares for the people in the Jaffna peninsula and additionally, cares for patient transfers from Vanni. Dr Jeyabalan who is the consultant paediatrician, communicated the needs for a pulse oximeter which measures the oxygen saturations in a neonate continuously as an indicator of their respiratory status. Responding to the needs, MIOT Wales presented two Nellcor Pulse Oximeters on November 19th, 2016 which the hospital was truly grateful for. As expected, the equipment has had a positive impact and is providing excellent health monitoring of neonates who are ill and well continuously. Further working with NICU, our next goal is to provide phototherapy units in the near future.
